Types Of Adhesives And Their Uses
Adhesives, Loctite, paste or glue, are materials that are used as sealants. Adhesives are instrumental in our everyday life. It is like it is going to be tough running our daily activities if these adhesives are missing.
There is a wide range of varieties of adhesives that are available on the market. It should not be difficult for anyone to locate these precious items for their use. What you always need to remember, though, is that all adhesives are designed for use with different services. What is more, different adhesives have different strengths.
And of all the adhesives, synthetic resin glues are considered the toughest. And long-lasting. They harden so well and smoothly. They can be used on different hard surfaces as well metals. Synthetic glue can also stick both porous and non-porous materials. They also become hardened and would not shrink at any one time. If you need them for your sticking; you will always find them in tubes.
Then there are also the polyester resins. They are pretty much like epoxies but will not shrink when used. When they hardened, they are ideal for glass fibre.
Another commonly used adhesive is the silicone. Silicones can withstand high temperatures. They are also resistant to water and are often used for electric cabling.
There are also adhesives that are derived from parts of animals. Common ones are the glue cakes that are made from the hides and bones. Then there is the famous gelatin, an adhesive that is even used for cooking. Animal adhesive are used on fabrics, cards and even papers.
There are also the adhesive in the form of aerosols. They are available in low or moderate viscosity. They are usually applied on a surface by spraying on the surface fast so that they adhesive droplets land on the intended surface before they dry up. Majority of these aerosols, adhesives are dispensed with the help of a spray gun or an aerosol can.
Designers often use these aerosol adhesives to cause an instant bond on the surface which they can reposition before they are set. One great advantage with the aerosol adhesive is that they are clear, stain-free and are very fine mist when they are sprayed. Even such a delicate paper can be sprayed, and it will not tear. One major disadvantage is that you need to spray in a ventilated area as the substance is highly flammable. You also need to be cautious not to inhale the fumes – you will expose your health to hazards.
The polyester resins are utilized in glass, plastics, and metals. Cellulose adhesives can be used in polystyrene, plastics, card, and paper. Urethanes can be used to stick metals, rubber, leather, wood and plastics. Lastly, the epoxy resins can be used to repair metals, stones, glasses, plastics as well as wood. Vegetable glues will glue papers and cards.
